Haiti is a place with many layers. I discovered the culture at an early age when visiting a friend’s home in Florida where the walls were covered with Haitian art. It was through the worlds depicted in these canvases that I was enticed to book my first trip. At the time I was working on a series of photographs taken with an old Kodak Brownie camera that I purchased at a yard sale for two dollars. My challenge was to push the limitations of this fixed-focus/fixed aperture box camera to explore colors, shapes and composition. Haiti was an amazing place to develop this project. Juxtapositions were the rule, and humanity was waiting at every street corner.
